I was trying to catch up with blog posts the other day before leaving for a trip to Arizona (my husband had a band gig for New Year’s Eve in Scottsdale). I have multiple websites and blogs and saw that this blog was the next one in line to post to.
I tried getting to the website and got a godaddy parked page instead of my site. I panicked at first since I’ve been through this before!
A prior web host let my domain lapse
I’m not going to go into too much detail as this was covered extensively when it happened a couple of years back. To make a long story short, I purchased this domain through a different web host provider (not directly from the domain seller).
As I went to post something to the site I had trouble getting in but figured it was a temporary hosting problem. Sure enough, I was able to get to the site later. This kept happening until one day I waited quite some time.
I called my web host who looked into things and couldnt’ find anything wrong. It came back online so again, I figured it was an issue on their end. Then one day it wouldn’t come up. Again, I called my web host and they couldn’t figure it out.
A few days later they tell me that the domain did indeed expire and I’d have to pay an addtional $80.00 as it was beyond the normal redemption period. A day or two after I authorized that I was told we were too late. The domain had been sold to someone else!
This was my first website
I had been nurturing it for years. I live in Oak Lawn (and have lived in the surrounding suburbs, too), so I’m an Oak Lawn area real estate expert. This website was #1 in Google and other search engines when you typed Oak Lawn real estate and other keywords. And now it belonged to someone else. All my years of effort and work were gone.
Then Morgan Carey stepped in
I had another site I had won in a contest created by Real Estate Webmasters (REW), headed by Morgan Carey. He heard about my dilemma and surprised me by purchasing my domain back (for more then $1,000) and giving me this new site hosted by his company.
In order to surprise me he put the domain in REW’s name. We’ve been talking about transferring it back to me (so he wouldn’t have to keep paying for it and updating it) but we just kept putting it off.
I once again freaked out when I couldn’t access it. After all that had happened it couldn’t be occurring again!
Back online
I immediately contacted REW and told them what happened and we finally got it transferred back to me. Now it’s my full responsibility and I will not let it expire ever again!
